How to find a photographer that’s right for you! There are many photographers to choose from so here are a few steps to find the right one for your vision.
1. Figure out session type
Are you looking for a family Christmas card photo or a wedding photographer? There may be a photographer that does both of these sessions, but some photographers specialize in a certain type of photography. I recommend finding someone who specializes in the types of photos you are looking for. Do you prefer candid versus posed? I like to capture both, but some photographers will focus on prompts for very candid photos rather than standard, more formal, “everyone looking at the camera and smiling”.
2. Determine your budget
Now that you’ve decided what you want, it’s time to determine how much you’d like to spend. Some photographers may include the session investments on their websites while others may have you fill out a form to inquire for a pricing guide. When you look at the prices, look at what the packages include. Does the package include a specific number of images, print release or in-person viewing to select photos? Make sure you know upfront if the package price is final or if there are post session potential upgrades (I.e. purchasing additional images for a set price). Also, don’t be surprised if you need to pay state tax on top of the package price. Some include it in the package.
3. Decide location
Where would you like to have your photos taken? Now, you don’t have to have the exact location as the photographer most likely has preferred session locations (here are my favorites). Are you willing to travel or will the photographer travel to you? Is there a cost associated with travel? Most people will choose to do a session locally or close by. But if you are traveling on vacation to a beach in Florida, you could hire a local Florida family photographer OR a traveling photographer. The opportunities are endless as well as the potential packages.
4. Look at their portfolio
What style of photography resonates with you? Light, bright and airy? Darker, moody, high contrast? Before choosing a photographer make sure their portfolio style matches the aesthetic you are looking for. Do you connect with the photos? Do they complete your vision? Can you see yourself in those photos?
5. Check out testimonials
Check out testimonials, reviews on Google and/or Facebook, and comments on past posts. Past clients will give you a good idea of their experience in reviews and clients. Another telling sign, returning clients! Those clients like the experience and quality of the products enough to come back.
Bonus: Ask the photographer questions
If you need more information or would like to see the connection, reach out to the photographer. You’ll quickly be able to answer the following questions. Are they responsive? Do they offer you guidance and reassurance? Is their business registered?
