I had the privilege of taking Mr. Gavin’s newborn photos. You may recognize the Speers from the beautiful golden hour maternity session last fall. They also happen to be neighbors and friends so I packed up the car to drive half a block down the street. In my defense, I brought quite a bit of equipment, props and wraps with me. Oh, and it was -13 degrees out.
Gavin was cooperative and pretty snuggly, although he did prefer being held rather than take solo photos. It was also wonderful to see Kelsey and Trenton as parents, and Gavin is so blessed to have them. We hadn’t been able to see each other much with the cold and being extra cautious.
What I love about lifestyle newborn sessions is the glimpse into the family’s environment. Gavin in his crib and his nursery. The whole Speer family in the master bedroom. These photos make for keepsakes for the years ahead because this is where they introduced a new member of the family.
There is a time and place for cutesy, posed and naked babies. My preference is to capture the family in their element, in their home and the love and connection there. There are photographers who specialize in posed or ’boutique’ style photos and take classes to pose newborns safely.
Do you have a preference of lifestyle versus posed newborn photos? Did you even know there is a difference?
Thank you again, Speer family, for allowing me to capture these moments for you. Gavin has some of the best parents, and I can’t believe I get to cheer you along on this journey of parenthood. – B
